I used to think fabric was probably the least important part of buying an abaya.
If it looked nice, that was enough for me.en I bought two abayas that looked almost identical online.
One became something I reached for all the time. The other stayed in the wardrobe for months.
That was probably the first time I realised fabric changes everything.
Not in a dramatic way. Just little things.
How it falls when you walk. Whether you feel comfortable after wearing it for hours. Whether you put it back on next week or forget about it completely.
Nida is a good example.
Most people have probably worn it before without even knowing its name. It's soft, comfortable and has that effortless drape associated with an everyday abaya. Nothing feels stiff or heavy about it, which is probably why it has stayed popular for so long.
Crepe feels different.
It's a little more structured and keeps its shape beautifully. Some people love that because it always seems to look polished, even after travelling or spending an entire day out. It isn't better than Nida, just different.
Then there's chiffon.
You can usually recognise it before anyone tells you what fabric it is. It moves differently. It catches the breeze. That's why it's so common in open abayas and occasion pieces where movement is part of the look.
The funny thing is, I don't actually think most people have a favourite fabric.
They have a favourite abaya.
Then one day they realise half their wardrobe happens to be made from the same material.
Maybe that's the easiest way to choose.
Instead of asking which fabric is supposed to be best, pay attention to the pieces you already love wearing.
There's a good chance the fabric has something to do with it.
